My Take on Star Trek and Its Films

It was bound to happen. Every movie related site or blog has the inevitable Star Trek post.  Here is mine.

I originally fell in love with the Star Trek mythology as a kid watching the original series in syndication (TOS).  Later as a teenager I was hooked on The Next Generation (TNG). Then Deep Space Nine (DS9) came out and I was addicted to yet another Star Trek show.  I never really got into Voyager.  Fuck Enterprise.  They really screwed this one up.

Then we get into the movies. This is where your favorite neighborhood Movie Whore is going to go through today.

The Motion Picture: A big let down to a lot of casual Scifi fans but one of this geeks favorites.  They went all out to show you the size of the Enterprise on the inside.  They gave you views of the interior of the ship that they never could in TOS.

I also loved the story line.  At the time it was an original story that no one had done before. They worked in our own history of the original Voyager probe sent into to space to see if there is any other intelligent life out there.  Having Voyager discovered by a race of living machines and giving it incredible capabilities to collect information about the universe and bring it home was brilliant.

Then bring in the sexiest bald woman I have ever seen and this flick will always be favorite out of the movies.

The Wrath of Khan: Damn Ricardo Montaban was in top shape for this flick.  Originally they wanted to put him in a body suit and he got a little pissy.

To this day I can not here a reference to this movie without screaming “KHAAAAAAAAAN!” Everyone knows this one.  This is typically the one that people point to as their favorite and I can see why.  It had everything you could have wanted in a movie.

Everyone remembers the ear bugs.  Everyone cringes when they think about that little slimy things going into your ear and wrapping them selves up in your brain.

Then at the end we see Spock die and everyone in the theater let out a “What the fuck?” in unison.

The Search for Spock:  2 words, Christopher Lloyd.  This is also the first time we see the new and improved Klingons.  When we first saw Klingons on TOS they had a tan and that was about where the differences ended.  Now they have a mountain range on their forehead and a language.
I loved the concept of what is going on on the planet with the accelerated evolution and development.  The one hiccup of the Genesis device.  Sure it creates quickly but it keeps that accelerated rate of development that eventually tears the planet apart.

The Voyage Home: A Scifi comedy.  “Double dumb ass on you.” Classic line.  This movie is one of my favorites from the series.  Look at awkwardness of everything they did in the past.  They did not fit and it showed. That’s what makes this movie work.  Dialog and performance is what made this movie one of the fan favorites.  They stayed true to the characters.  These characters gave of us a number of one liners and and memorable scenes.  One last thing, “Everyone remember where we parked.”

The Final Frontier: Thank God this was not the final movie.  The only I really liked about this movie was in the beginning as Sulu, the navigator and  Chekov, the helmsman were lost in the woods and needed to be transported out. “Please don’t tell anyone about this.”  After that the movie went down hill fast and never really recovered for me.

The Undiscovered Country: Loved from beginning to end. As a matter of fact it was only after this movie that I was able to accept the change of “…where no man has gone before” to “…where no one has gone before.”

Again it was a solid story with some great dialog and again they stayed true to their characters. I found it a fitting send off to the original cast and crew.

This was also the final time we got to watch 2 Kirks battle it out.  “I can’t belive I kissed you.”

“Must of been the thrill of your life.”

So here we are 6 down and 4 to go.  I think we are going to save the other 5 for tomorrow and then I will do the other obligatory movie post and tackle the other Star franchise. Well kids until then you have fun and go watch something entertaining.
